The roadstead and commercial port
A vast sheltered bay, the Brest roadstead stretches over nearly 150 km² and hosts the main French Atlantic naval base. From the commercial port, music bars and terraces come to life as soon as the weather allows along Quai Jean-Bart and the former customs quay. You drink there facing the orange cranes and applaud improvised concerts. A late-afternoon meeting on top of a wine bar offers a stunning view of the shipping.
Océanopolis, discovery park
East of the Moulin Blanc marina, Océanopolis gathers under one roof three pavilions devoted to temperate, tropical and polar oceans, with sharks, seals and penguins. Opened in 1990 and extended since, it is one of the largest marine discovery parks in Europe. Meeting at the polar aquarium, where penguins zip past underwater, breaks with a classic outing and leads to lighter conversations.
Capucins and urban cable car
On the left bank, the huge former Capucins workshop has been turned into a covered public space with cafés, a media library and the famous cable car linking the two banks of the Penfeld in three minutes. A round trip gives a fresh view of the city. On Lyad, Brest members share their favourite quays; it is up to you to find someone to climb into the next cabin with.
